Gunfighter Shane, (Alan Ladd) arrives on his horse at a homesteaders place who is defending his land from an intimidating cattleman Ryker (Emile Meyer) who is trying to push the homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) off of his land.
While defending the family, he scares the Cattleman away and builds a relationship with Joe and his wife Marian (Jean Arthur).
Joe's young son Joey (Brnadon de Wilde) is captivated by Shane's quiet but manly strength and the way He handles a pistol.
He accepts Joe's offer for a job as a hired hand and becomes good friends with the family.
After hearing of another homesteaders death from the bullying of Ryker, Joe is determined to go and defend what is rightfully his.
He stops him with a fight wanting to defend the family and not letting Joe risk his life, he takes out after Ryker and his powerful gang.
He gives you the feeling of the classic Tale of Two Cities with an western rustic Wyoming feeling about it. This is a classic romantic, western, adventure movie.
