Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) is a successful ad man, a workaholic who is at the peak of his advancing career, which demands him a great deal of hours.
Joanna, his wife, bluntly walks out on him, leaving their young son Billy in Ted's incapable hands.
Through trial and error, Ted is pressured to devote more time to his boy Billy, than to his career, which causes to miss important deadliness and leads to his temporary unemployment.
Ted faces a big challenge after Joanna comes back to file for custody of Billy.
Ted learned to manage his work and family time adequately, but that is still not sufficient in court, as Joanna wins custody of their son.
